Elected and sworn in to his first term on Calgary’s City Council in October, 2013, Councillor Ward Sutherland brings to City Hall his keen business insight and commitment to his communities. He holds 25 years of senior leadership and management in top-tier companies such as Sony, Tim Horton’s, McDonald’s, and Hartco Corporation. Prior to his new position as Ward 1 Councillor, he was the president of the Rocky Ridge Royal Oak Community Association.
For over 16 years, Councillor Sutherland has lived and volunteered in Ward 1. His community initiatives include: the urban drilling policy; traffic calming measures; and preservation of wetlands and parks. As a community volunteer, Councillor Sutherland has an established track record of positive outcomes across various levels of government, on multiple diverse issues. In 2013, he was honoured to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to the community.
Councillor Sutherland brings to City Council his fiscally accountable approach to spending, which he has demonstrated by showing consistent achievement and management of multi-million dollar financial corporate budgets. He is also an advocate for seniors and a board member of Silvera, an organization that for over 50 years, offers affordable housing for Calgary seniors from all walks of life.
