Description
We perform TMJ treatment, root canals, gum disease therapy, and other treatments in order to provide dental care to our patients.
Periodontal Care and Gum Disease Treatment
Gum disease can be caused by a number of factors, including poor or infrequent blushing and flossing, tobacco use, heredity, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes. Signs of mild gum disease, or gingivitis, include swelling and puffiness. In addition, gums may be likely to bleed during flossing or brushing. If left untreated, gingivitis can develop into a more severe form of gum disease known as periodontis, in which the gums can become inflamed or enlarged and the supporting bone and tissue structures may begin to degrade.
Regular dental visits are important in order to detect gum disease in its earliest stages. Gingivitis can be treated with non-surgical methods such as thorough cleanings, the topical application of antimicrobials, or prescription mouthwash. Advanced gum disease may require surgery to repair gums and remove all traces of infection.
We encourage you to schedule a consultation at a Dental Choice location in Edmonton, Calgary or Airdrie, Alberta to have signs of gum disease checked and to receive any necessary treatment as quickly as possible.
Root Canal Therapy
Root canals may become necessary if the patient has a deep cavity near the nerve center of the tooth. These cavities can cause severe tooth pain and eventually lead to the loss of the tooth if left untreated.
Local anaesthetic and sedation techniques are used during root canals to assist with any discomfort. To begin the treatment, the damaged tissue within the pulp chamber of the tooth is removed and the area is disinfected. Then a temporary filling is placed within the tooth. A second visit is required to replace the temporary filling with a permanent filling or dental crown and to check for any signs of infection.
In addition to eliminating pain, root canal therapy can prevent the need for tooth extractions. To learn more about root canals or to schedule a consultation, contact Dental Choice in Edmonton, Calgary, and Airdrie Alberta today.
TMJ Treatment
TMJ treatment is performed to correct conditions that affect the function of the temporomandibular (TMJ) joints. These joints are located on either side of the jaw near each ear and connect the jawbone to the skull. They are two of the most frequently used joints in the body and play a significant role in eating, speaking, and making facial expressions.
If TMJ joints are not functioning properly, severe headaches, toothaches, or pain in the ear, jaw joint, or cheeks can result. Severe cases can even cause pain in the neck and shoulders. Patients with TMJ disorders may also have difficulty opening their mouths and experience jaw popping or clicking.
TMJ disorders can be caused by a number of factors, including teeth grinding, a misaligned bite, dislocation of the TMJ joint, arthritis, and wear and tear of the cartilage disks that pad TMJ joints. TMJ treatment can take the form of mouth guards, jaw exercises, or TMJ bite therapy. We can help you alleviate painful TMJ symptoms and restore full functionality to these important joints. Dr. Kevin Philipow at our Macleod Dental Choice in Calgary offers TMJ treament as well as snoring appliances for patients. Oral Exams and Oral Cancer Screenings
We perform thorough oral exams in order to check for signs of tooth decay or gum disease and to help determine the course of treatment that is most appropriate for each patient's needs. We also perform oral cancer screenings so that treatment can be provided right away if any signs of this disease are detected.
Cleanings
Regular dental cleanings are essential to maintaining good oral health. Our hygienists perform thorough, gentle cleanings to remove plaque and to help keep teeth and gums in excellent condition.
Tooth Extraction and Wisdom Teeth Removal
In the event that tooth extraction is necessary, we use sedation techniques so that the procedure is as comfortable as possible. Our dentists also will discuss tooth replacement solutions with the patient such as dental implants and dental bridges.
Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure that is often performed in young teenagers to remove wisdom teeth before they have a chance to come in and impact the alignment of the teeth.
Bad Breath Treatment
Bad breath can be caused by eating certain foods and using tobacco products, but the most common cause of bad breath involves the build-up of bacteria in the mouth. If you are bothered by bad breath, our dentists and hygienists can help diagnose its causes and provide treatment to eliminate its effects. In many cases, regular dental visits and proper brushing and flossing are all that are necessary to remove mouth odours.
Dental Emergencies
If you have a dental emergency, our staff is ready to serve you immediately. We are prepared to treat all different kinds of dental emergencies, including toothaches and loose, fractured, or knocked-out teeth.
Children's Services
At Dental Choice, we are committed to the oral health and well-being of patients of all ages. We offer dental care for children of all ages. We know the importance of establishing healthy dental habits early in life, and we are committed to providing children with dental care so that they are less inclined to neglect treatment later in life.
Fluoride Treatment
Dental fluoride is applied to the teeth after dental cleanings to help prevent cavities and tooth decay. Fluoride treatments are available in gel trays, foam trays, and rinses; in addition, we offer several different flavours from which patients can choose.
Sealants
Dental sealants are protective coatings of plastic material that are affixed to the teeth to help guard against bacteria and plaque build-up. They are most often placed on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth and can be especially beneficial in preventing tooth decay in children.
Teeth Grinding and Mouth Guards
We offer custom-fitted mouth guards that can help prevent teeth grinding and offer relief from TMJ pain. Mouth guards are often the most effective treatment for teeth grinding and can help prevent fractures and other tooth damage from occurring.
Dental Health and Overall Health
Dental health can be an indicator of the health of the rest of the body. Gum disease can let bacteria into the bloodstream that wreaks havoc elsewhere in the body. Also, signs of a disease in the body may first show up in the mouth. The connection between periodontal disease and heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and other conditions is still being researched, but evidence suggests that gum disease is directly linked to the health of other body systems.
